Dunedin-based artist J Callander returns to Invercargill bringing his unmistakable mix of outlaw folk and raw rock energy.

Inspired early on by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan before discovering the heavier sounds of Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, J’s songwriting blends powerful storytelling with gritty, heartfelt musicianship. Influences such as Mark Knopfler, Johnny Cash and New Zealand legend Derek Lind also shine through in his music.

Expect a night of compelling original songs, including material from his latest album Shadows in the Shade, mixed and mastered by Oscar and two-time Grammy nominee Aaron Glemboski

Fresh walls. Fresh energy. A new era for live entertainment.

As part of The Riff’s launch, this vibrant mural was created by committee member and event producer Jersey Rhein alongside local Southland artist Diane Griffiths. Inspired by the artists and icons that shape live performance culture, the piece brings a bold, youthful energy into the venue - celebrating where we’ve come from and where we’re heading.

The Riff is stepping forward with a fresh vibe while staying grounded in the music, creativity and community that built this space.

This is just the beginning.
